Watertown Daily Times - DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES RESPOND TO REP. STEFANIK'S STATEMENT ON THE IRAN DEAL WITHDRAWAL
From the article:
Patrick Nelson, Stillwater, sent out a press release saying that upholding the deal was important to maintaining American credibility and world peace. He also posted a seven-minute video on Facebook in which he talked about the history of American involvement in Iran. For Mr. Nelson, this history — including putting the Shah in power, leading to the hard-line Iranian Revolution — is crucial to modern-day negotiations.
“It seems that the president and the congresswoman want to take this deal out of its proper political history,” Mr. Nelson said. “We shy away from complexity in campaigns, but it’s a complex issue.”
Mr. Nelson said he saw this deal as an opportunity to begin working with moderate elements in Iran and lay the groundwork for further talks,
“It was the first agreement of this kind we had gotten with Iran since the revolution,” Mr. Nelson said. By leaving the deal, “We’ve empowered the hardliners who don’t say, ‘death to America’ as a political talking point, but actually believe it.”
The deal may not have been perfect, but Mr. Nelson says it was the only clear route to avoiding military action.
“Diplomacy is hard,” he said. “But it seems like the only other alternative is military action.”
